Different Different types Of Jacket
Jackets Come In A lot Of StylesI formulated my own definition after checking-out various online sources including dictionaries and wikipedia: A jacket is an item of clothing worn on the upper area body. Most often a jacket is waist or hip length. Jackets can be confused with coats but note that in general a coat is longer - an example is the ‘coat like’ three quarter length jacket worn by Neo in the Matrix.
Perhaps it would be useful to look at different types of jackets and put them into categories:
- Stylish jackets
- Protective jackets
Vogue Jackets
Blazer Jacket
The blazer resembles a suit jacket. As a rule blazers have metallic front and cuff buttons and a breast pocket. Subsequently it is generally worn as smart casual wear. In style and cut the boating jacket and sporting jacket are similar to the blazer. On the other hand the blazer is likely to be of a more conventional color, ‘navy’ for example is a popular blazer color, as is black. Blazers are routinely used as the basis of a uniform, e.g. for school kids and airline stewards or as part of the attire for a club.
Leather Jackets
The leather jacket is very famous together with regard to the image of its style and also for the material it is made from. Leather jackets became especially well-liked immediately after World War Two: consumers loved the style of the ‘bomber jacket’, so called for the reason that it was worn by bomber pilots. At the outset the leather jacket was associated with rebellion and worn by actors such as James Dean and Marlon Brando. Leather jackets are still identifiable with rebellious sub-cultures such as rock stars and bikers but they’re unquestionably part of the mainstream fashion world. A fashionable example of this jacket type is the Superdry mens leather jacket.
Denim Jackets
The word ‘denim’ derives from the terms ‘serge de Nimes’. ‘Serge’ is a cloth and was at first harvested in the Nimes area of France. So ‘serge de nimes’ evolved into ‘denim’. Denim had a similar fashion route to leather: Initially denim was practical, being used by workers in challenging environments. Consequently it became incorporated into fashion lines and became very fashionable in the 1960s and 1970s.
Many famed design labels create jackets, for example Wrangler, Nike, G Star and Lacoste. G Star jackets are a relative newcomer compared with the other more well-known players. However the Lacoste jackets is far more widely known.
Jackets That Offer Protection
The Donkey Jacket
From Wikipedia: “A Donkey jacket is a short buttoned coat, typically made of unlined black or dark blue woolen material; originally worn as a work jacket in the United Kingdom. It is derived from the wool sack coat worn by workers in the 19th century, and the OED references the term as first used in 1929: “one with leather shoulders and back”.
Flak Jacket
Flak jackets are purpose made to offer a good defense to the individual from offensive items including knife blades, bullets and shrapnel (also known as ‘flak’). The term ‘flack jacket’ is interchangeable with ‘bullet proof vest’ as worn by armed forces and the police in a large number of countries, which are layered with robust defensive material such as steel or titanium.
The Chef Jacket
Not only is the white chef jacket quite recognisable, it is also very protective and highly practical. For example the chef can quickly hide stains by instantly turning it inside out!
Miscellaneous Jackets
President Eisenhower, the World War Two USA President had a unique jacket called the ‘Ike’. It was styled to make Ike appear like a warrior having a blouson style.
